2011: a year in review
01. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
Rode a highway bus, wore a yukata & went to a festival, shojo-manga style, watched a movie in the theatres by myself, taught English.
02. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions? Will you make more for next year?
I just found them! They were:
Go to church more regularly - No. I should have though.
Show my parents...

JLPTN1合格
I got the notification in the mail today! N1 is definitely not the end, not by any means, but it’s definitely one the milestones of 2011.
Also, although of course personal growth etc is a great outcome of going on exchange, it’s also nice to have some external, objective proof that I’ve achieved something in my one year overseas.

ただいま。
It’s been a week and a half since I arrived back in Sydney. The first few days were a very pleasant dream, especially the bit where I got an unexpected gift from my brother (!!) but there are also a lot of unpleasant things that I haven’t managed to deal with yet. I still have several weeks of missed classes to catch up on, campus fashion remains terrible (why are girls still wearing...

thoughts on a sunday morning
I went out for drinks in Osaka last night with a guy I met at a guesthouse in Hongdae in March. Which I have to admit sounds pretty shady but was surprisingly fun and I feel like I can finally say that I’ve made at least one solid guy friend in Japan. (With less than a month before I leave …)
My memories of the train ride back to Kyoto are a little vague, but I’m hangover-less...

always: 三丁目の夕日
I watched this movie yesterday after we were shown part of it in class. I’m a pretty fussy viewer but this was a great movie. Set in post-war Japan, it’s a slice-of-life type film revolving around a small community in Tokyo. Solid acting all around, combined with a script perfectly balanced between humor and sentiment. (It’s been a while since a movie made me cry.) Also,...

憧れ。
My exchange is coming to an end in August, so I’m quitting my part-time job this Wednesday. It’s a big relief - I’m going to need as much time as I can get to get ready for exams, pack my bags, etc. but it’s also a little sad. Although I’d only been working there for 4 months, the Japanese staff were very kind (and also very pretty), my co-workers helped the hours go...
